Congrats

Instagram

“Congrats!”
It’s short for “Congratulations!”
Congratulations is a very long word that’s hard to say and write,
so Americans normally say congrats to friends and family. 🎊🥳

Congrats!

Two things to be careful of when using congratulations/congrats:
① Congratulations is not used for holidays/birthdays.
② Put an “s” at the end; “Congratulation” is not correct English.

Just like in Japanese, English speakers like
to shorten words and phrases as much as possible.
Just like how “ありがとうございます” can become “あざす” in Japanese,
“Thank you!” can become “Thanks!” in English (or even “thx!” on the Internet). 🙏

There are too many of these shortened phrases to count in English,
but one more useful one is “‘Sup?”
It’s short for the greeting “What’s up?” which we introduced in the last post.

はWhat’s up?

nothing much

Last time, we talked about casual American greetings.

One of the most popular is “What’s up?”
The most common answer is “Nothing much.” (or “Not much.”)
か“Not much.”になります。

What’s up is a little different from “How’s it going?”;
it’s not asking your feelings.
What’s upというのは、How’s it goingとは少し違い、

Americans use it to show that they’re not too busy to talk.

If you are busy, however, you can answer with what you are doing.

For example, “I’m studying for a test.”

Because it’s not asking your feelings, it sounds strange to answer, “Good!”

When in doubt, reply “Nothing much!”

What’s upに、What’s upと返して、hello代わりに使う人もいます。

How’s it going?

How’s it goingです。

“Hey Tomo, how’s it going?”
とか
“How’s what going…?”

How are you? I’m fine thank you. And you?

There are a lot of casual greetings in American English,
one of which is “How’s it going?”
The “it” means your life.

How’s it going?

So what they are really asking is “How is your life going?”
The most common answer is “Good, you?”
Other answers are:
Not bad. 🙂
Alright. 😕
Can’t complain. 😊

Not bad. 🙂
Alright. 😕
Can’t complain. 😊

Other greetings with the same meaning include
“How are things?” and “How’ve you been?”
How’s it going

他にも“How are things?” とか “How’ve you been?”があります。
是非、How are you?

Varsity

Girl A:Do you know him?

Girl B: I only know him by name. What’s up?

Girl A:I like him a lot. He’s very smart. He can sing well. And also he’s on varsity!!! He’s just perfect.

Last time, I told you that sports are a huge part of American school culture.

Sports teams in junior high and high school are very competitive;

teams hold “tryouts” for prospective members,

which are a test of your skill in that sport.

If you pass, you are assigned to

either the junior varsity (or “JV”) team or varsity team.

中学と高校のスポーツは本当に competitive(競争の激しい)で、

見込みのある選手を決めるためのTryouts(スキルを見るためのテスト)を開催します。

These players represent the school in regional and national competitions.

Varsity is usually made up of older students,

but if a first-year or second-year student is talented enough,

they can make the varsity team.

These students are usually the most popular kids in school. 😎✨

Being on varsity is a huge honor

and members can get a special jacket

called a “letterjacket” to show off their skill!

Varsity

Gym

↓↓

“Do you know where Sarah is now?”
Sarah

“I think she is in the gym.”

“O…k…”(What!? Is there a gym in school?)

In Japan, when we hear the word “gym,”

we think of a business where you pay for a membership

to exercise and train your muscles,

but in American schools, the 「体育館」is also called the gym.

Sports in a huge part of school culture in the States.

In addition to the gym,

American high schools often have different spaces for sports teams:

The gym is where normal P.E. classes are held,

and students play indoor sports. 🏐🏀

The track is where students run and play outdoor sports. 🏃‍♀️⚽️

Track

The weight room is like the Japanese image of a gym

– team members train their muscles using exercise machines. 🏋️‍♀️

The locker room is where team members shower

and change their clothes after practice. 🚿👚

A fun fact: high school gyms are very spacious,

so they’re often used to hold school dances and other events!
